Basic knowledge about modular machining

Modular machining allows you to assemble a tool optimised to your requirements from individual standard products. In this way, arbor milling cutters, end mills and the like can be equipped as desired with indexable inserts of various carbide grades to produce the result you want.

These tools can be clamped with intermediate interfaces from the field of tool clamping technology and can thus be used on any machine. The use of modular cutting tools is particularly economical because it keeps the number of tools in production small and structured.

What are the advantages of modular quick-change systems?

Complex milling, drilling, threading and deburring operations can be mastered particularly efficiently with modular quick-change systems. The following added values are worth highlighting:

Lathe tools

Milling tools

In the Tool-Arena you will find a wide range of process-safe end mills and shell milling cutters. These are available in various material designs as light metal cutters, solid carbide cutters (VHM cutters) or solid steel cutters.

Drilling & sinking tools

Sinking tools are used when finished bores need to be deburred or shoulders need to be created in the bores. As an application example, one can imagine screw heads, rivets or nuts that are to be sunk flush with the workpiece surface.

Indexable inserts

The shape of the insert is decisive for its machining purpose. Inserts with a narrow corner angle are particularly suitable for the precise machining of contours. This form of machining is called finishing. In contrast, an insert with a larger corner angle can remove more material. This form of machining is called roughing.

One advantage of the indexable insert is that the insert can simply be loosened and reclamped with the opposite cutting edge should one edge become too worn. The indexable insert owes its name to this process. In addition, the cutting edges can be changed quickly in modular machining with indexable inserts. When all the cutting edges are used up, the insert has to be replaced.
